Is COVID-19 sexually transmitted?
COVID-19 is a virus that isn't spread through sexual contact (STI). The virus, on the other hand, is spread by contact with droplets from the nose and mouth, including the saliva of an infected person, which can occur when people are in close proximity. When you have sex or are intimate with someone, you have a significant possibility of passing on COVID-19. Because the virus has been detected in faeces (poo), actions like rimming (licking around the anus) might be a mechanism for the infection to spread. Some investigations have shown traces of the virus in men's sperm (cum), but additional research is needed to determine if it may be spread between individuals via sperm.
Things to keep in mind –
- If you don't live with someone, avoid kissing or sharing saliva with them.
- Rimming and other sexual behaviours that include licking around the anus should be avoided.
- Every time you have sex, including oral sex, use condoms or dental dams.
- To reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 to your partner, consider using a face mask while having sex.
- Before and after intercourse, take a shower and thoroughly cleanse your hands and body with soap and water.
- If you use sex toys, make sure to clean them completely with soap and water before sharing them.
- Consider stimulation strategies that don't require physical touch, such as filthy chatting or mutual masturbation while physically separated.
- Reduce your total number of sexual partners, and/or do so simultaneously.
- Avoid having sex or being sexually active.
